Which cover letter template fits me?

A cover letter template is only as good as its fit for the target industry. A cover letter for a bank looks different from one for a creative agency — color choice, layout density, and tone should match the reader's expectations. YourCVTool offers 12 cover letter templates that cover exactly this range, from restrained and classic to modern and expressive, and can be adapted to your own profile in the editor with just a few clicks.

Which template for which industry?

Not every industry expects the same style. This overview shows which of our cover letter templates work especially well in practice — as a starting point, not a rigid rule.

Finance, Law & Consulting

Geneva and Zurich rely on clean lines, plenty of white space, and restrained colors. Both signal professionalism and precision — qualities especially valued in banking, auditing, and legal consulting.

Marketing, Creative & Design

Berlin, Madrid, and Paris work with more color and a more distinctive layout. They suit roles where creativity and a distinctive presence are part of the application itself.

Tech, Product & Engineering

Amsterdam, Stockholm, and Oslo are functional, clean, and free of distraction — ideal when content and clarity matter more than visual flourish, such as for technical and product-oriented roles.

HR, Sales & Customer-facing roles

Dublin and Istanbul feel more personal and warmer in tone. They fit roles where interpersonal skills take center stage, such as in HR, sales, or hospitality.

Administration & international roles

Vienna and London combine classic elegance with a modern layout — a safe choice for administration, public service, cultural institutions, and internationally oriented positions.

The structure of a perfect cover letter

Regardless of the template you choose, a convincing cover letter always follows the same basic structure. If you fill in these five building blocks properly, you've already done most of the work — the template then just handles the layout.

1. Header & contact details

Name, address, phone number, email, and date, plus the company's address and, if known, the name of the contact person. Formatting mistakes here immediately look unprofessional.

2. Subject line & salutation

A precise subject line with the job title and reference number (if available), followed by a correct, personal salutation instead of a generic "Dear Sir or Madam" when the name is known.

3. Opening with your motivation

The first two to three sentences need to land: why this specific role, why this specific company? Avoid stock phrases like "I am writing to apply" — instead, open with a concrete connection.

4. Main section with experience & culture fit

Two to three paragraphs that connect your relevant experience with the requirements of the job posting. Concrete examples and results are more convincing than plain descriptions of traits.

5. Closing & signature

A short, confident close referencing a possible interview, followed by a professional sign-off and your signature. Our templates handle this correctly, automatically.

Why a good cover letter matters

A cover letter is your first personal connection to recruiters – before they even look at the details of your resume. It shows your motivation for the role, links your relevant experience to the job posting, and reflects whether you fit the company culture. A poorly formatted or generic cover letter costs you chances before your resume is even read.

Templates that handle the formatting for you

A cover letter has a fixed structure, but many people don't know how to format it correctly: a header with contact info and date, the correct salutation, 3-4 paragraphs covering motivation, experience and culture fit, and a professional closing with signature. Our 12 templates take care of exactly that – you just write your content, the layout is already there. If you want, the AI can write your cover letter straight from a pasted job posting (10 credits per AI action).

All templates are ATS-safe

Every one of the 12 templates uses a single-column, simple structure with no hidden code or graphics that could confuse an applicant tracking system (ATS). Your cover letter arrives exactly as you wrote it – readable by humans and machines alike.

Single-column layout

No tables or text boxes that get misread by ATS parsers.

Standard text flow

The top-to-bottom reading flow matches what parsers and recruiters both expect.

Clean PDF structure

The export produces real, selectable text instead of embedded images — a prerequisite for an ATS to be able to read the content at all.

Fully customizable

Colors & fonts

Change the color scheme, font and sizes directly in the editor – no coding required.

AI text generation

Paste a job posting and let AI draft a matching cover letter that you then freely edit.

Multilingual

Create your cover letter in English, German, Spanish or Turkish – in the same template.

PDF export

Download your finished cover letter as a cleanly formatted PDF or share it via link.

Frequently asked questions

Can I try all 12 templates for free?

Yes, you can preview any of the 12 templates and build your cover letter with it. To save, download or share, you need a plan – even the Starter plan ($4.99/7 days, 100 credits) unlocks all templates.

What happens after the 7 days on the Starter plan?

The Starter plan runs for 7 days and then automatically continues as the Standard plan ($19.99/month) unless you cancel first. This way you never lose access to your saved cover letters.

Are the cover letter templates really ATS-safe?

Yes. All 12 templates use a simple, single-column structure with no graphics or hidden formatting codes that applicant tracking systems could misread.

Can AI write my cover letter from a job posting?

Yes. Paste the job description and AI creates a personalized draft you can then edit (10 credits per AI action). The pasted job posting stays local in your browser and is never stored on our servers.

Can I combine the template with my resume?

Yes. We offer matching designs for resume and cover letter, so both documents look consistent and come across as a professional package.

How long should a cover letter be?

As a rule of thumb, one DIN A4 page, divided into a header, salutation, three to four short paragraphs, and a closing. Our templates are precisely designed for this length, so you don't have to worry about page layout.

Do I need to choose a new template for every application?

No. You can use the same template for multiple applications and just adjust the content to match each job posting. Many applicants deliberately stick with one template to create a consistent look across their resume and cover letter.

What's the difference between a cover letter template and a generic word processor template?

A generic Word document has to be formatted by hand and easily breaks its layout with every text change. Our templates automatically adjust line spacing, paragraphs, and page breaks, while staying fully ATS-safe.

Your data stays safe with us

Your content is stored encrypted in your account and never shared with third parties. You stay in full control of your saved cover letters at all times – viewing, editing or deleting is always possible.
